An optical MPO/MTP Cassette consists of a core of glass, which provides a high refractive index, surrounded by a low refractive index cladding. This is also reinforced with aramide threads to prevent physical damage of the MPO/MTP Cassette core and the sheathing, which is ultimately surrounded by a synthetic sheathing for protection. This allows MPO/MTP Cassettes to transmit optical signals from point to point with low signal loss, even at large distances. MPO/MTP Cassettes are mainly used for the connection of optical transceivers, patch panels and further extensions of optical fiber connections of existing high-speed networks. MPO/MTP Cassettes can interconnect routers, servers, firewalls, load balancers, FTTX systems and similar hardware with other optical ports among each other. MPO/MTP Cassettes are available in duplex (two fibers) and simplex (one fiber) variants, enabling multi-mode and single-mode data transfers without bandwidth limitation.
MPO / MTP cassette solutions enable MPO or MTP cables to be plugged directly to a port provided for this purpose and to receive 12x duplex connections on the opposite side without further splicing. Due to the resultant higher port density, up to 36 ports are possible on one height unit. MPO / MTP cassettes are the simplest wiring solution to be installed according to EN50173-5, as well as the ISO/IEC 24764 standard, and are very comfortable to handle compared to conventional fiber optic splice boxes. MPO / MTP cassettes are available as single-mode and multi-mode versions and are used in conjunction with a rack chassis solution as a patch panel. MPO / MTP cartridges allow fast creation or expansion of fiber-optic network installations, saving 75% of the usual installation time and the compact size of 50% rack space. Since no splicing device or special tool is needed anymore, elaborate training of employees for assembly or testing is no longer required.
MPO (Multi-fiber Push-On) - This type of optical fiber connector was invented by NTT in the 1980s. The MPO connector provides multi-fiber configurations for multimode or single-mode connections, in standard with 4, 8, 12 or 24 fiber cores, but is also available as a custom option with up to 72 cores. The distance between the glass fibers is 250µm, so the MPO connector is a high-density solution that can make many glass fiber cores available in a single ferrule. The MPO connector has a glass fiber reinforced ferrule with a diameter of 2.5mm and a length of 6.4mm, which is slightly larger than an MTRJ connector. The MPO plug has a push-pull latch with sliding sleeve and two alignment pins at the end of the ferrule. This connector has been standardized in IEC-61754-7.
MTP (Multi-Fiber Termination Push-On) - The MTP connector is a further development of the MPO connector connection and a trademark of the US company US Conec. MTP connectors go further in the definitions of the standards even further than the MPO connector standard in order to improve the transmission quality or the contact a bit further. The biggest change is the shape of the guide pin. While an angled pin is used with MPO, a rounded pin is used with MTP. This has the advantage that the guide pin hole of the MPO / MTP socket is less stressed, can be reconnected more frequently and thus improves the contact of the individual fibers.

The optical ferrule in the inside of the plug of MPO/MTP Cassettes is available mainly with three different types of ferrule polish, which is reflected in the transmission on the attenuation value of the optical connection. One differentiates between Physical Contact (PC polish), Ultra-Physical Contact (UPC polish) and Angled Physical Contact (APC 8° angle polish). The latter variant is only available with Single-mode MPO/MTP Cassettes. Due to the minimal gap in the connection of MPO/MTP Cassettes to the optical interface, there is a certain attenuation. To solve this problem and to minimize the overall attenuation of the connection, there are MPO/MTP Cassettes with different polished ferrules. In general one can say the higher the return-loss attenuation the better the connection quality. For our example, the PC polish type MPO/MTP Cassette leads to 40dB return-loss attenuation or higher, the UPC polish MPO/MTP Cassette type leads to 50dB return-loss attenuation or higher and an APC polish MPO/MTP Cassette type leads to 60dB return-loss attenuation or higher. The insertion loss should be less than 0.3dB. Here you can say, the lower the insertion loss, the better the performance.
BlueOptics MPO/MTP Cassettes are manufactured in compliance with generally accepted industrial standards and norms and have an above-average lifetime. BlueOptics MPO/MTP Cassettes also exceed standards and norms due to their properties. All BlueOptics MPO/MTP Cassettes are designed for up to 1500 plug-in cycles and offer a very low input-loss as well as a very high return-loss. All BlueOptics MPO/MTP Cassettes come in a flame-resistant LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) sheathing. This results in a very low smoke development compared to Patch Cords with a PVC sheathing. Furthermore, no halogen is released.
As a standard for the transmission of signals in a network today, BlueOptics MPO/MTP Cassettes represent a way to build favorable high-availability connections in high-speed networks in hardware from different manufacturers. MPO/MTP Cassettes of the brand BlueOptics use only high-quality brand fibers from well-known traditional companies for the production of glass products or communication technologies (for example from Corning or Fujikura) and high-quality fiber optic connectors (for example from Diamond or Reichle & De-Massari).
Please be careful with NoName and 3rd Party OEM MPO/MTP Cassettes, which mostly use cheap components of Asian companies, in the worst case cheap replicas from China. These MPO/MTP Cassettes have a function at the first moment, but they cannot achieve the attenuation, longevity, and quality of the products that use the MPO/MTP Cassette components of market-leading manufacturers.
