10 Frequently Used Terms to Know about High-Speed Assemblies!

Sometimes, networking professionals looks flooded with high-speed assembly terminologies such as; Interoperability, DAC, QSFP+, SFP+, EEPROM, AOC, QSFP, SFF, etc. High-Speed assemblies are considered ideal in numerous data center deployment scenarios including but not limited to Middle of Row (MoR) and Top of Rack (ToR). It is a matter of the fact that new technologies and products are getting launched at an astonishing rate. Today, we are going to present our readers with a comprehensive list of various assembly terms and their acronyms. So, this article can prove to be a good reference point for many. Following are some phrases that are commonly used in connection to high-speed assemblies.

1. SFP+

The small form factor pluggable is a hot-pluggable, compact transceiver. It is used for both data communication and telecommunication applications. In typical scenarios, the SFP+ is associated with 10G.

2. QSFP+

The quad small form-factor pluggable is the least size or most minor form factor available. It is used as a bridge between networking hardware and fiber optic cables. The QSFP+ is generally associated with 40G.

3. Transceiver

A transceiver is a device that can simultaneously transmit and receive communications as it comes with both the radio transmitter and receiver in a single housing.

4. EEPROM

EEPROM is quite famous as it can be coded and used in a broad range of the industrial instrument. EEPROM stands for Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory, and it works as the brain of the unit.

5. DAC

DAC stands for Direct Attach Copper. It is a copper based HSA product that comes with SPF connectors SFP connectors on both ends. These cables are widely used to connect routers to switches or servers.

6. Interoperability

Some equipment manufacturer use purposely designed codes or other mechanisms to inhibit the use of non-approved cables. Information from the EEPROM is used in the implementation of such control measures. A networking device installed with a generic EEPROM can complement almost all the modern switch modules. However, some legacy models such as models from the Cisco Catalyst Series can deny access to the port when a generic unit is inserted. Thus, only Cisco-compatible modules (AOC, DAC, and transceivers) can only be used in such cases.

7. Active

Active assemblies are the ones which consume power. These assemblies are sold in both AOC and DAC forms. Active devices offer wider ranges for long-haul deployments.

8. Passive

Passive assemblies are the one which doesn’t consume power to operate. These assemblies are manufactured and sold in DAC form only. Typical passive assemblies can offer up to seven-meter link distance only.

9. AOC

AOC stands for active optical Cable. AOC comes with a transceiver module on either end. A fiber optic cable is utilized for the interconnection of transceivers.

10. HSAs

HSAs or High-Speed Assemblies are a low-cost, high-efficiency solution available for applications with active and passive cables. HSAs support Ethernet Protocols, InfiniBand, and Fiber Channel.
